The 2023 Hurricane Season

The European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) [via Colorado Statue University (CSU) meterologist Philip Klotzbach] predicted that El Nino will peak to the middle of summer/hurricane season. Apparently this will negatively impact this year’s hurricane season. In their annual tweet CSU predicted a slightly below-normal hurricane season with 13 named storms, 6 hurricanes and 2 major hurricanes.

From the National Hurricane Center, the 2023 Atlantic tropical cyclone names are: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Don, Emily, Franklin, Gert, Harold, Idalia, Jose, Katia, Lee, Margot, Nigel, Ophelia, Philippe, Rina, Sean, Tammy, Vince, Whitney.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and as of June 1, there has been very little activity in the Gulf or the Atlantic.

Arlene

The day after I said there has been very little activity Tropical Storm Arlene formed June 2, 2023 at 1800 UTC about 265 miles west of Ft. Myers, Florida, with winds of 40 miles per hour moving south at 5 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Arlene weakened and disappated about 135 miles west-southwest of the Dry Tortugas with winds of 30 miles per hour moving south-southeast at 7 miles per hour.

Bret

Tropical Storm Bret formed June 19 at 2100 UTC about 1295 miles east of the southern Windward Islands with winds of 40 miles per hour moving west at 21 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Bret weakened and disappated about 160 miles west-northwest of northeren tip of Guajira Penensula Colombia with winds of 40 miles per hour moving west at 21 miles per hour.

Cindy

Tropical Storm Cindy formed June 22 at 0300 UTC about 1110 miles east of the Lesser Antilles with winds of 40 miles per hour moving west-northwest at 14 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm weakenend and disappated about 375 miles north-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands with winds of 40 miles per hour moving northwest at 14 miles per hour.

Don

Subtropical Storm Don formed July 14 at 0900 UTC about 1165 miles west-southwest of the Azores with winds of 50 miles per hour moving north at 6 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Don strengthened to the Hurricane Don about 480 miles south-southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada with winds of 75 miles per hour moving north at 12 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Don weakened overnight to a tropical storm about 350 miles southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland, Canada, with winds of 65 miles per moving north-northeast at 16 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Don weakened and became post-tropical storm about 585 miles east of Capre Race, Newfoundland, Canada, with winds of 45 miles per hour moving east-northeast at 20 miles per hour.

Emily

Tropical Storm Emily formed August 20 at 1500 UTC about 1000 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, with winds of 50 miles per hour moving west-northwest at 10 miles per hour.

Tropical Storm Emily weakened and became a post-tropical storm about 1225 miles west-northwest of the Cabo Verde Islands, with winds of 35 miles per hour moving west-northwest at 9 miles per hour.

Franklin

Tropical Storm Franklin formed August 20 at 2100 UTC about 270 miles south-southwest of San Juan, Puerto Rico, with winds of 45 miles per hour moving west-northwest at 14 miles per hour.
